With the Commonwealth Games set in the beautiful surroundings of Glasgow, the triathlon took place at the heart of Strathclyde Park. On Thursday 24th July on a stunning Scottish summers day, the water glistening and the crowds deep with spectators, the Commonwealth-best athletes took to the pontoon. With the first medal event of the games, all eyes were set on the athletes competing.
Nordic Oil ambassador Dan Halksworth was selected to represent Jersey in the individual Men’s event. A stacked line-up of athletes, including the Gold and Bronze Olympic medalists; Alistair and Johnny Brownlee, Dan was amongst some of the finest triathletes in the world. Dan had a solid swim, and rode with the 2nd pack on the bike leg, but made a solo move towards the end of the 40k bike section, and created a break-away to gain ground on the leading pack of just two-the Brownlee brothers. Dan came into T2 in 3rd place, and then ran a solid 10k to finish in a very respectful 17th place.
Dan said on twitter; “Massive thank you to everyone at home, at the race, support team and sponsors. Left everything out there today and had fun doing it!”
The gold rush from the England team, with two gold’s, one silver and a bronze medal, created a fantastic atmosphere at Strathclyde Park. This continued for the mixed relay on Saturday 26th July. Nordic Oil ambassador Eimear Mullan was representing Northern Ireland in the third leg of the relay. She had a fantastic swim, bike and run leg, providing a solid platform for the NI team to come away with a 6th place finish.
